Why it's Important to Enjoy Your Fitness Journey!

Many people want to get fitter and follow the flock and join a gym in January. But the gym isn't necessarily the right environment for everyone and there are so many in person and online ways to get fitter.

It is really important to have goals and a destination for your fitness goals, however it is even more important that you spend some time finding activities you enjoy doing. Without enjoying the journey, you're soon going to give up and stop.

WHAT ARE THE KEY REASONS PEOPLE FAIL:

  • They focus on the end goal not the process.

  • They do something because they feel they should.

  • They see exercise as a punishment.

  • Try one thing and give up.

  • Try one thing for a week and give up because they aren’t getting their results, things take time.

  • People compare their day 1 with someone's day 1001; seeing others doing something competently and confidently can be discouraging however you might well be comparing apples with oranges. Skill and technique take time, whether that be at a class or a gym.

  • How they measure progress is focussed on one metric - usually scales, ignoring the habit change, improved fitness levels, stamina, strength and other health markers such as blood sugar levels or blood pressure.

WHAT IS THE ALTERNATIVE?

> Find your fit - finding somewhere you are comfortable is important, feeling nervous is normal and different to feeling comfortable.

> Be open minded - try things a few times before dismissing them.

> Be prepared not to like things - you wont like everything you try, and that is ok and to be expected.

> Be patient - sometimes people enjoy something but want to get proficient at it before they get themselves chance to develop the skills.

> When fat-loss is the goal, nutrition is so important

> Try to be active in life - people who exercise tend to be more inactive in daily life, so try and make sure you move more in every day life - take the stairs, park further away, walk to work etc.

THE FINAL 'T'

The reason I am as active as I am is because I enjoy Zumba, this was my gateway into the fitness industry. Before becoming an instructor or Personal Trainer (PT) I was a composer/ musician. I fell in love with Zumba, the music, dancing and how it made me feel. Soon I was doing 2-3 classes a week. Overtime I have found other activities I enjoy, such as weight lifting.

Find your 'Zumba'; something you enjoy, then you wont want to miss a workout. THIS is the key to achieving your goals, not punishing it with something you loathe.
