I Hate My Body Because...

Updated: Feb 17, 2023

This is sadly a super common phrase. Recently I launched a Share the Love Campaign to encourage people to celebrate their body for its ability. It has been met with some resistance and confirmed the statistics around poor self body confidence which inspired the campaign.

I am not trying to encourage false positivity with the campaign, I am however trying to inspire people to reframe how they look at their bodies; herein lies the concept of body acceptance.

What is Body Acceptance?

Body acceptance is the practice of accepting and loving your body, regardless of its shape, size, or imperfections. It involves recognising and appreciating the unique features and qualities that make you who you are, and letting go of societal beauty standards and unrealistic expectations.

In today's society, we are bombarded with images and messages that tell us how we should look, what we should wear, and how we should act. This constant pressure to conform to a certain ideal can lead to negative body image and self-esteem issues.

How to Improve Body Acceptance

Improving body acceptance can be a difficult process, but it is crucial for our mental and physical well-being. Here are some tips to help improve body acceptance:

  1. Practice self-compassion: Be kind to yourself and acknowledge that you are worthy of love and respect, regardless of your appearance.

  2. Challenge negative thoughts: When negative thoughts about your body arise, challenge them with positive affirmations or realistic self-talk.

  3. Surround yourself with positive influences: Spend time with people who uplift and support you, and consume media that promotes body positivity.

  4. Focus on health, not appearance: Instead of obsessing over your appearance, focus on taking care of your body through healthy habits such as eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, and getting enough rest.

  5. Celebrate your body: Find ways to celebrate and appreciate your body, such as dressing in clothes that make you feel confident or participating in activities that make you feel good.

The Final 'T'

Improving body acceptance is a journey, and it requires patience and consistency. It's important to remember that everyone's journey is unique, and progress may not happen overnight. With time and effort, however, you can learn to love and appreciate your body for all that it is.
